How to Optimise Small Space in the Warehouse with a Warehouse Shelving System?

Every business needs a storage solution especially if they are dealing with products and not services. Products such as FMCG or Fast Moving Consumer Goods require extensive storage and warehousing facilities. Most businesses either rent out a warehouse or a storage unit or own them as a cost-saving measure.

But with a warehouse, there must be efficient plans and solutions in place to prevent the space from cluttering and becoming hard to manage. Racks and warehouse shelving units are considered to be one of the most used forms of storage solutions for warehouses to handle and manage all of their storage-related woes.

In the modern-day system, racks and shelves are now RFID tagged and can be automated for easy identification and queuing of products using warehouse management systems.

Warehouse Storage Solutions

The primitive methods of storing products and items included piling them in the warehouse as is without any means of infrastructure. Things were stored either in cardboard boxes or laid on the floor and were accounted for manually using a logbook for incoming and outgoing goods.

This was a manageable solution until businesses got bigger and the need for efficiency mounted. In today’s world, there is lesser space and a need for more managed solutions for effective utilization of even the smallest of spaces. This is where solutions such as racks and shelves come into the picture.

Racks and shelves are big units made from metal or plastic. Metal such as aluminum or stainless steel is the most used type of metal for building racks and shelves. Plastic racks and shelves are made from reinforced materials such as PVC and other plastic fibers. Racks and shelves can be arranged by measuring the total storage space of the warehouse.

Racks and shelves give the business the option to store both horizontally and vertically. They provide options with multiple storage racks that can help in organizing the products in a categorical manner. Racks are vertical spaces and shelves are horizontal spaces. Both these types of units are necessary for the essential utilization of space in a storage unit.

Space Optimisation in Small Warehouses

For smaller warehouses, managing products and units can be quite difficult. Small warehouses can be easy on the pockets of the business especially if they are being rented and leased. Smaller warehouses are also easy to maintain.

But the storage and management of items inside the warehouse can be quite a task. For this reason, racks and warehouse shelving units are considered to be the best solution for such storage issues.

The new age shelving and storage management systems allow tagging of the racks and shelves and can even be mapped using an autonomous coded facility that uses radiofrequency to detect the storage location of each item. With small warehouses, large racks with lots of vertical spacing can be an excellent idea.

The only issue here would be to reach the products on top. This can be solved easily with autonomous picking systems. Categorical distribution of products based on their entry and exit dates such as the FIFO and LIFO management system also helps in easy management of items when they are on taller racks and shelves.

Racks and shelves have a long lifespan and need maintenance rarely. Choosing the right provisions and stacking products with proper weight distribution are the only factors to look out for.
